Course Description: This comprehensive 1-day (12-hours) firearms training course introduces the student to the AR-15/M-4 rifle. During this course, students will learn the basic gun-handling skills that are necessary to safely operate and maintain this weapon system, including nomenclature, disassembly/reassembly, mechanical operation, care & cleaning, preventive maintenance, zeroing iron sights, shooting positions and other topics.

Lesson 1: Rifle Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling

• AR/M4 Disassembly/Assembly and Component (nomenclature) Parts
• Function Checking the AR/M4 Rifle
• Mechanical Operation of the AR/M4 Rifle
• Loading and Unloading; Press-Check & Mag Check

Lesson 2: Ammunition Knowledge & Fundamentals of Rifle Shooting

• Cartridge Component Identification and Firing Sequence
• Cartridge Storage
• Cartridge Malfunctions and How to React to Them
• Cartridge Identification and Selection
• Projectile Trajectory Concepts
• Single-Point & Dual-Point Sling Use & Carry
• "Never Break Grip" Concept
• Fundamentals of rifle shooting:
  • Prone Firing Position
  • Sitting Firing Position
  • Kneeling Firing Position
  • Off-Hand (standing) Firing Position
• Malfunctions (class 1, 2, & 3)
• Zeroing Iron Sights
• Confirming Mechanical Off-Set & Hold-Off Point-Of-Impact

Lesson 3: Fire Arms Cleaning and Storage

• Clean Fire Arms in Teams of 2 People
• Discussion of Storage Devises

Lesson 4: Rifle Selection & Opportunities for Skill Development

• Clubs and Competitions
• Scoring Targets

Lesson 5: Defensive Shooting and Qualification Shoot

• Live fire drills from the Bench (supported); Zero Iron Sights.
• Shooting from the Two-handed Standing Positions
• Live Fire Qualification

Upon completion of this training course, the student will possess the fundamental skills to participate in the AR/M4 Rifle Deployment Course

Requirements:

• Must be 21 years of age & possess a valid Illinois FOID card
• Notepad and Pen
• Eye and Ear Protection
• Crew-neck Type Shirt
• Lose-fitting (preferably "tactical") Trousers
• Closed-toe (preferably "tactical") Foot-wear
• Baseball/Operator Type Hat
• Heavy (gun/operator) Belt
• Magazine Carriers (tactical vest/plate carrier highly suggested)
• Personal AR15/M4 Rifle/Carbine
• Three (3) Hi-capacity Magazines Minimum
• Rifle Cleaning Kit and Gun Oil/CLP
• 100 rounds (minimum) of Ammunition
